MSC Cruises has successfully completed a biofuel trial on the MSC Opera together with the Italian energy company Eni. The project aims to reduce emissions in ship operations.
What it's about
The test used a biofuel produced from renewable or waste-based raw materials. Such fuels can be used in existing ship engines without major modifications and can significantly reduce the CO₂ footprint compared to conventional marine diesel.
Why it matters
The cruise industry is under pressure to cut its emissions. While new builds increasingly rely on LNG or methanol, the big question is how the existing fleet can be operated more sustainably. Biofuels are considered an important bridging solution here – they work in ships that have already been in service for years.
Context
The test is one of a series of biofuel trials by several cruise lines. Availability and price remain decisive for broad adoption – sustainable fuels are currently still considerably more expensive than fossil heavy fuel oil.
