LiveWhy aren't all ships visible?
AIS positions are read via land-based receivers. Ships on the open sea, in port with the transponder switched off, or far outside the reception zones only reappear once they come into range. As a rule, a ship reports every few minutes – on Atlantic crossings it can take several hours.
