Star Clippers
About Star Clippers
Star Clippers was founded in 1991 by Swedish shipowner Mikael Krafft and operates three genuine tall ships — not motor vessels with decorative masts, but fully sail-capable clippers. The company is headquartered in Monaco. The concept is consistently retro: classic clipper sailing ships from the 19th century built with modern techniques, with the option to actively participate in sailing (the crew handles the rigging, and guests are welcome to help).
The flagship is the Royal Clipper (2000, 4,425 GRT, 134 m, 227 guests) — the world's largest active full-rigged ship, with five masts and 42 sails. Alongside her sail the somewhat smaller Star Clipper (1992) and Star Flyer (1991), both four-masted fore-and-aft schooners carrying 170 guests. On-board atmosphere: casual, no dress code, just one main restaurant, simple cabins without a veranda, but with a swimming pool at the bow and an open-air library. The on-board language is English (with a German-speaking tour guide on many routes).
Route highlights include the Caribbean (winter), the Mediterranean (summer), and occasional transatlantic crossings under sail. Target audience: sailing enthusiasts, nature lovers, and travelers who prioritize the pure experience over service.
