Cruising with Children: The 8 Best Family Ships Worldwide (2026)
Which cruise ships are really child-friendly? A comparison of the best ships with an aqua park, kids' club and baby care – with recommendations by children's age.
26. April 2026
A cruise is a perfect holiday for families: the ship moves, the child stays in the same hotel bed. But not every ship is equally good for children. Here are the 8 best family ships worldwide – sorted by children's age.
For children aged 0–3: Disney Wish & AIDAnova
Babies and toddlers need one thing above all: reliable baby care. Most cruise lines only start the kids' club from age 3. The exceptions:
- Disney Cruise Line – Disney Wish, Magic, Wonder, Dream, Fantasy, Treasure: all have a trained nursery (It's a Small World Nursery) for babies from 6 months, plus changing rooms in several places on board. This is Disney's unique selling point.
- Royal Caribbean – Wonder of the Seas, Symphony, Icon: the Royal Babies & Tots Nursery for 6–36 months (for a surcharge). Similar to Disney, but cheaper.
- AIDAnova/AIDAcosma – kids' club from age 3, baby care on request by the hour. The family cabins are very generous.
For children aged 3–11: AIDAprima & MSC Grandiosa
From kindergarten age, the onboard programme should go beyond baby care: a kids' club, aqua park, pools for children.
- AIDAprima – an Aqua Park with three water slides, a 4-storey Theatrium atrium and an all-day kids' club with three age groups.
- MSC Grandiosa – the Doremi Family Cruise with five age groups and a character programme built around the LEGO Group. An aqua park, karaoke lounges for children.
- Carnival Mardi Gras – BOLT, the first roller coaster on board a cruise ship (in addition to water slides, mini golf and the SkyRide).
For children aged 12–17: Wonder of the Seas & Icon of the Seas
Teenagers want activity, their own spaces away from their parents and a fast internet connection.
- Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas – the FlowRider surf simulator, an ice rink, a zip line, the Ultimate Abyss (a 43 m dry slide), the Sky Pad (a bungee trampoline with VR goggles). A dedicated teen area (The Living Room) without parents.
- Icon of the Seas – the largest ship in the world, with its own Surfside themed area (Splashaway Bay 2.0) and the largest water park at sea.
The premium family ship: Disney Wish
Disney Wish (2022, 144,000 GT, 4,000 pax) is the newest Disney ship. Highlights for families:
- AquaMouse – the first water slide at sea with a Disney show (original Disney film music while sliding)
- The magical main restaurant Worlds of Marvel with an interactive Avengers show dinner
- Frozen, Star Wars and Marvel themed worlds in several restaurants
- Dedicated adult areas (Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, Quiet Cove Pool)
Priced in the upper mid-market, but the service standard is outstanding.
The most economical family cruise lines: Costa Smeralda & Mein Schiff 7
For those who do not want to maximise the family onboard experience but want to keep it very economical:
- Costa Smeralda – an LNG flagship with the Squok Club (kids' club) and an aqua park, considerably cheaper than AIDA or MSC. Often available in the Mediterranean from 600 EUR/person/week.
- Mein Schiff 7 – premium all-inclusive means: no expensive onboard cocktails for the parents. Four pools, one with a glass roof (usable year-round), a kids' club with baby care on request.
What families really need on board – a checklist
- A family cabin with a sleeping arrangement of 2+2 or 2+3 pax (otherwise book two cabins with a connecting door)
- A cot on request – free at all major cruise lines, request it in advance
- A baby-friendly pool option – nappies in the pool are a drama. Cruise lines with a splash pad without pool depth for babies: Wonder, Icon, AIDAnova
- Baby food and purée – not all cruise lines carry it (Disney and MSC yes, AIDA only to a limited extent). Bringing your own is allowed.
- A steam steriliser – on request in Disney cabins, otherwise bring your own
A route tip for families: the Mediterranean in summer
The Caribbean sounds tempting, but a 12-hour flight with a toddler is tough. More pragmatic for German families:
- Western Mediterranean from Genoa/Civitavecchia/Barcelona – direct flights under 3 hours, many port stops with child-friendly beaches
- Norwegian fjords from Hamburg/Kiel – no flight, compact 7-day trips, spectacular scenery
- The Caribbean only realistic from school age – Disney Cruise Line with its own private island Castaway Cay is the gold standard
Conclusion: which ship for which child?
With babies and toddlers: Disney Wish or AIDAnova. With primary-school children: Wonder of the Seas, AIDAprima or MSC Grandiosa. With teenagers: Icon of the Seas or Wonder of the Seas. Economical: Costa Smeralda or Mein Schiff 7. Premium: Disney Cruise Line, no ifs or buts.
