10 Extraordinary Cruise Experiences in 2026: From the North Pole to the Robot Bartender

A roller coaster, a cocktail robot, a halal cruise or the world's largest water slide? These 10 extraordinary onboard experiences make cruises in 2026 more than just beach-hopping.

26. April 2026

A cruise has long meant more than just beach and buffet. Modern ships offer experiences that put even specialised themed hotels in the shade. Here are 10 extraordinary onboard experiences that, in 2026, exist only on board.

1. The first roller coaster on a cruise ship: BOLT on Carnival Mardi Gras

Carnival Mardi Gras (2021) was the first cruise ship in the world to have a real roller coaster on board: BOLT, an electromagnetically powered track that runs along the ship's hull on Deck 18. Speeds of up to 60 km/h, accelerating to top speed in 2 seconds – with a view of the sea at a height of 56 m. Also available on the sister ships Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee.

2. Cocktails from a robot: the MSC Virtuosa Starship Club

MSC Virtuosa (2021) has the world's first humanoid robot bartender: MSC Rob in the Starship Club. Two mechanical arms can mix, garnish and serve cocktails – 2 per minute. Orders are placed via tablets, and the show is part of the experience. Stylish cocktails from 12 EUR, very Instagram-friendly.

3. The world's largest water slide: Frightening Bolt on Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas (2024) has the longest, highest and fastest water slide in the world: Frightening Bolt, 154 metres long, with a 17-metre drop. Plus six further water slides in the new Surfside themed area and in Thrill Island. Eight slides in total on one ship – the largest aqua park at sea.

4. A halal cruise: AROYA Cruises

AROYA (2024) is Saudi Arabia's first own cruise with a consistently Arabic onboard experience: no alcoholic drinks, separate wellness areas for men and women, a five-times-daily prayer programme, halal cuisine, Arabic live music. Routes on the Red Sea from Jeddah, with a planned expansion into the Persian Gulf. The only halal cruise in the world – also interesting for non-Muslim guests as a cultural trip.

5. A geographic North Pole experience on Le Commandant Charcot

Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot is the only luxury cruise ship in the world capable of reaching the geographic North Pole. Ice class PC2, hybrid propulsion of LNG plus an electric battery. In summer, three special North Pole voyages: 16 days from Spitsbergen across the ice to the Pole. Guests can step out at 90° North and walk on the ice – an experience that no other cruise programme in the world offers.

6. The adults-only tattoo studio on Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages (Scarlet Lady, Valiant, Resilient, Brilliant Lady) is the only cruise brand with a permanent tattoo studio on board – Squid Ink. Tattoos are done on the spot by professional tattooists, with special ocean-styled designs (anchors, octopus, waves). Plus a permanent drag-show stage and yoga at the bow. Adults only, from age 18.

7. An ice rink on board: Studio B on Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is the only cruise line with real ice rinks on board – Studio B on Wonder, Symphony, Oasis, Allure, Harmony and Icon of the Seas. Ice shows with professional skaters take place here daily; during the day the rinks open for guests to skate freely with complimentary skates.

8. A tall-ship experience on the Royal Clipper

Star Clippers' Royal Clipper (2000) is the largest active full-rigged ship in the world – five masts, 42 sails, 134 metres in length. Unlike motor ships with decorative masts, the Royal Clipper is fully capable of sailing: in a good wind she reaches 14 knots under sail alone. Guests may, on request, help out in the rigging – this is a genuine 19th-century clipper experience in a modern build.

9. Sky Pad: a bungee trampoline with VR goggles

Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas have the Sky Pad – a bungee trampoline with VR goggles on the uppermost deck level. As you jump up, you see a roller-coaster world around you via VR. The show is divided into several themes (outer space, dragon realm) and lasts 5 minutes per session.

10. The five-masted Wind Surf: the world's largest sailing cruise ship

Windstar Cruises' Wind Surf (1990), at 14,745 GT and 187 metres in length, is the largest sailing cruise ship in the world. Five masts, computer-controlled sails (fully electronically furled and unfurled), and unlike the Royal Clipper, the Wind Surf is more of a motor yacht with sails than a pure tall ship. The onboard atmosphere is intimate with only 342 guests, with a marina platform for water sports at the stern.

Bonus: open-air cinema at the pool

Princess Cruises is the cruise line of Movies Under the Stars – a huge LED screen above the pool, with an evening film programme with blankets and popcorn. Standard on Sun Princess, Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Sky Princess and all Royal-class ships. A pure pleasure experience – but hard to beat as a premium Caribbean cruise memory.

Conclusion: which experience for which type of traveller?

  • Adrenaline: BOLT on Carnival Mardi Gras or Frightening Bolt on Icon
  • Tech fascination: MSC Rob on MSC Virtuosa
  • Authentically nautical: Royal Clipper or Wind Surf
  • A once-in-a-lifetime experience: Le Commandant Charcot North Pole
  • Culturally different: the AROYA halal cruise
  • Adults only: Virgin Voyages with the tattoo studio
  • Family action: the Royal Caribbean ice rink and Sky Pad

If you are looking for a one-off extraordinary experience, choose the ship deliberately based on the experience – not the other way around. Most of these experiences exist on only one or two ships worldwide.
