Antarctica Cruise: What You Need to Know About Polar Expeditions

Antarctica by ship – a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but complex to plan. What does it cost, which ships go there, and what sets an expedition apart from a standard cruise?

16. May 2026

For many, an Antarctica cruise is the ultimate travel experience. But not every trip is the same – there is a huge difference between an 18-day expedition with landings and an Antarctica sighting from the deck of a mega-cruise ship. Here is what you need to know.

Two categories: expedition vs. sighting

An important distinction up front:

  • Antarctica expedition — smaller ships (under 200 guests), ice class, IAATO membership, landings with Zodiacs, penguin encounters, a science programme. Examples: Hurtigruten MS Fram, Ponant Le Commandant Charcot, Silversea Silver Endeavour, Atlas World Navigator.
  • Antarctica sighting — larger ships (1,000–3,000 guests), no landings, only views of ice-covered islands from on board. Examples: Holland America Zaandam class, Princess Grand class. Cheaper, but a far less immersive experience.

For the real Antarctica experience, only the expedition is an option.

IAATO: the mandatory membership

All genuine Antarctica expeditions are organised within the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO). The association sets strict rules:

  • A maximum of 100 guests on land at the same time at any one landing site
  • No two ships at the same site at the same time
  • A 5-metre distance from all animals (except penguins, which come closer of their own accord)
  • A total biomass limit per region

Ships with more than 500 guests are therefore officially not allowed to make landings in Antarctica. That makes the small expedition ships the only option.

Routes: Peninsula or Weddell Sea

Two main route types:

  • Antarctic Peninsula — the most common trip, from Ushuaia (Argentina). 10–12 days, crossing the Drake Passage, several landings with penguin colonies. Packages around 6,000–12,000 EUR.
  • Weddell Sea / Ross Sea — the remote regions, reachable only with icebreakers. Le Commandant Charcot, with ice class PC2, sails these special routes. 18–21 days, from 25,000 EUR.

Best ships for Antarctica 2026

  • Hurtigruten MS Fram (2007) — the classic. 318 guests, 12 Zodiacs, good value for money. Standard Peninsula routes from 6,500 EUR.
  • Ponant Le Commandant Charcot (2021) — the premium highlight. Ice class PC2 (capable of reaching the North Pole), hybrid propulsion, restaurant curated by Alain Ducasse. Special Antarctica routes from 25,000 EUR.
  • Silversea Silver Endeavour (2022) — luxury polar travel with an all-suite concept. From 18,000 EUR.
  • Atlas World Navigator/Voyager (2021) — boutique expedition, smaller ships (196 guests), a Portuguese onboard experience. From 8,000 EUR.

Best time to travel

  • November to early December — spring in Antarctica. Few tourists, penguins are in breeding mode. The ice is still thicker — some routes may be harder to navigate.
  • Mid-December to January — peak season. Penguin chicks hatch, perfect for nature watchers. The highest prices, but the best wildlife.
  • February to March — late summer in Antarctica. Whales (especially humpbacks) are most common, penguin colonies are chaotic (chicks are fledging), water temperatures are at their highest.

What you experience on an expedition

The standard programme of an 11-day Peninsula expedition:

  • 2 days crossing the Drake Passage outbound (south from Ushuaia)
  • 5–7 days of landings — penguin colonies (Adélie, gentoo and chinstrap penguins), seal beaches, old whaling stations, research stations
  • The Polar Plunge (a voluntary swim in 2-degree water, a tradition)
  • 2 days crossing the Drake Passage on the way back

What you need for Antarctica

  • A polar parka — usually provided by the cruise line
  • Waterproof boots — usually lent by the cruise line
  • Seasickness tablets — the Drake Passage can be brutal
  • A good camera with a telephoto lens — penguins come so close that 50–200mm is enough, but whales are further away
  • Travel insurance with polar coverage — standard policies often do not cover polar regions

Conclusion

An Antarctica cruise costs money and time, but it is one of the few remaining genuine travel experiences. Recommendation for 2026: Hurtigruten MS Fram in January (the best penguin experience) or Ponant Le Commandant Charcot for premium travel and deeper routes. Book 12–18 months before departure — places are limited by IAATO quotas.
